Need help with recording vocals!

Hello everyone. I am a new youtaite who just started out and finished making his first cover. I use a Blue Snowball mic set on Cardiod mode. Do you guys have any tips on recording vocals because as seen on my first cover https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmKP4t35KtCyLE1zX9Z6gLg/videos I obviously did not do a great job unfortunately. It started out bad at the beginning but I thought of it to be acceptable to some extent. But the problem I faced was at the part where I was required to sing louder (at around 0:46). When I did the vocals seem to be recorded with very jumpy volume and I had to use a very high level of compression and ended up with the results as you see. I also tried out singing further away from the microphone but ended up with a really nasal voice. (Another big problem is my voice sounds VERY boring and unemotional in my recordings despite trying to sing in a lively tone, this is the problem that I am hating the most)

I never had a Blue Snowball mic (to be honest it always looked like a toy to me x:).

For the volume problem, try to back off from the mic a little when you get to the louder parts and just use some compression, using 2 tracks and turning the gain down a little could also help. Also try using a little bit EQ to cut low frequencies, because from the part you said, it sounds  a bit bulky to me.

As for singing with a lively tone, there is no real shortcut, you have to practice singing the way you want to sound, there is no way around it. Record yourself while singing and experiment with your voice, just remember to not do anything that could hurt your voice, if you feel strained or it hurts it's wrong.

Well that's all i know i myself am not that good at singing and all this stuff x:

If you want to listen to it you can try this cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6tes01lRTA

or go to my soundcloud where i upload snippets or preview versions: https://soundcloud.com/flyingsky/berserk-preview/s-u1wlc

But i'm not thaaat good at mixing nor singing as you can hear.

Anyways: The thing about singing is that you have fun, if you have fun and keep it up, and try to improve, you will improve!

I wish you good luck c:

Thanks :D I will try to experiment more with the mic. Though for the bulky part can you tell me the frequencies I need to cut off? I rolled off just about everything starting form 130 hz in the EQ in that cover. I also checked out your cover and I find the mix to be great, do you have any tips on using EQ?

Well you have to experiment yourself with EQ, there are not frequencies that will do for everything. 130hz seems to be fine for your voice. but for my voice it would be too much - it would sound pretty thin haha. (do you see why i say you have to experiment yourself?) It could also be that you got a lottle closer to the mic and the proximity effect is what i heard. You could also try to use a little bit EQ in the higher frequencies and boost it a little there, but remember it's always good to not boost too much, for example i don't ofen boost more than 5db (there are times where i do), but as always that's just how i do it, you can try out whatever you think sounds good. Every voice is different and needs to be handled differently.

As you could hear the Berserk cover is pretty raw there is almost no mixing, because i just showed the singing to a friend (damn that song is pretty hard to sing x:)

All i did was slap a compressor on cut off the low end like you did (i did 70hz because my vocal sounded too thin otherwise), used  a little bit bit reverb and that's pretty much it.

I don't really want to touch on the Navigation cover, that is the first cover i tried to really mix, i mean do everything and not just have fun singing a part of it and trying to do some stuff (and most things kinda weird i just opened the project, the EQ for example is pretty weird o.o)

Hope this helps you at least a little x:

I can't really give any recording tips but, well, I'll tell stuff related to youtaite that I've been repeating for i dunno how many times.

It's not wrong, but it's better if you check ytchorus . There are more expirience people there. Not just expirience people, the number of youtaites is greater there than here.

And just a friendly warning or telling, about credits. It's better if the pic is from a more,, 'safe' website, like pixiv or devianart; and make sure to ask permission.  Tho, sometimes artists says there is no need to ask for permission. Source like zerochan or wallpaper sites are usually dangerous (not always).

Also, tips on EQ is,, well... here . It's an EQ Cheat sheet. hope it's useful!

anw, I LOVE YOUR VOICEEE!! Natural Ikemen Voicee~ Look forward to more covers! //plsdontkillme

----

@Flyingsky I listen to your beserk and you seem to have a lot of potential and NATURAL IKEBO!!! //fangirls

Anyway, what I wanna say is, try to 'join in' the community more. It'll help in many way as I've been observing the 'newbie' or 'beginner' youtaites for a while. //plsdontkillme

I just remembered something I wanted to tell you. It's just an advice so feel free to ignore it. Feel very free to ignore this : I've seen not a little conflict in names. Not everyone, but 'some people' don't like to share same alias. You may or may not stumble on another 'Shiro' who don't like your name being Shiro. Well, it may not happen but well, it's your own choise if you want to change it or not. I'm just telling this because Shiro is a super duper common name I see here and there.
