My friend has a great voice, and she wants to become an utaite, but she is worried if they are any requirements. She lives in Australia and is not a proffesional singer, but she can sing Japanese really well.

I can't give any tips on finding friends, but "no one wants to collab" and such is exaggerated.
For example there are several threads on this wiki, where Youtaite try to connect to others:
Also about the forum I mentioned earlier: it could be this one: http://ytchorus.forumotion.com/
Also I am pretty sure you don't need to tell everyone, that... They can pretty much hear themselves, what quality the recordings are. So if you have a rly good mic, no one should think that you're making covers with cheap mics etc. And it doesn't help to always say how unfair things are, and how people are more popular than you... And I think it's pretty fair to say, nobody is very fond complainers.
Hm I checked the disclaimer, but didn't find it back then. (I checked now, and found it.) But I don't think it's prevalent enough. (Else I would have noticed it.).
Well the answer is just interpreted wrong. (Or the question is worded wrong) As I said, the question was not "how to be popular", but "how to be an utaite"...
Don't give up
Hi there! I'd just like tp say, although the guide is very descriptive, there are some things that are missing that feel are very important and significant to becoming a utaite and/or YouTube singer. I'm a utaite and youtaite myself, so hopefully i may help you all out a little.
1. A YouTube singer, Utaite, and Youtaite are not the same, infact, they are very different. Going back to when I said I was an utaite and youtaite, I've barely started as an utaite and am hoping to grow, so for now I only qualify as a youtaite.
YouTube singer/vocalist: An artist, coverist, or vocalist covering various genres of music. (Some create their own songs)
Utaite: A coverist who covers songs specifically under the genre/style/catergory of anime, Vocaloid, J-pop and etc. An Utaite is a Nico Nico Douga user, NOT a youtube user! (Some create original songs as well. This applies to all categories)
Youtaite: A coverist who covers songs specifically in the anime, Vocaloid, J-pop, etc category. A youtaite is a Youtube user!!! (Some create original songs as said before.)
Things you'll need when becoming either a Youtaite or Utaite:
1. An OC (Original Character)
Basically, an OC is a description of how you want to look and be portrayed in your videos. you can create an image with avatar creators or commisson artists to draw you one, if you can draw your own, even better!
2. A good/Decent mic
This is crucial to becoming any kind of singer online. When you first start out, it's okay to use your phone if the mic is decent but as time goes on it's important to start purchasing better mics so you can improve your content. Having a good mic will help you in the long run so start saving! Currently, I use a Snowball mic and irs only around $60 - $70 on Amazon. The mic is clear and there is little to no background noise, however, I do hope to invest on better mics in the future.
3. A Mixing software
YOU WILL NEED THIS AND I'M 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000...% SURE YOU WILL NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF VOCALIST YOU ARE, YOU'LL NEED THIS!!! You will need to know how to mix your vocals to the instrumental. A good software to start with would be audacity, if you have a Mac or an Apple computer, Garageband would be another good option as well.
4. A good video editing software
I want to say animating software as well, however, not always necessary. When you first start out, you may use your phone, there are decent softwares on phones such as vivavideo, filmora mobile, Imovie mobile, video show, etc. Softwares on the computer eould be Openshot, Windows Moviemaker and Imovie. For high schoolers who have ysed frames before, that would be something cool to try too.
5. Dedication, and a consistent uploading schedule
This is very important, if you are consistent with your content, chances are more people will notice you. Try to create a schedule and stick to it,
6. Collabs
A good way to start is by auditioning for collabs hosted by other people. (I'm holding auditions for Christmas collabs for those who are interested.) This will help you become more "out there" and known to the community, as well as meet mew people who will help you grow.
7. Of course... Have an accountand have fun!
I wish you all best of luck, to enjoy yourselves and have fun!
kindest regards,
Youtaite Jess Me
I'm not expecting 1000 subs per cover, but at this point I have exactly 1 sub per video. Including my mom and brother and best friend.
It's impossible to get noticed. I can't make myself an article on here, I can't post in reddit's many music communities, I have tried everything and I have no clue where to self-promote to our community, ESPECIALLY places where self promotion is even allowed.
I've uploaded a total of 8, a few are private because they got such low viewcounts or I just decided I didn't like them. Also, my wave cover and Happy Halloween cover took 3 months each, GLIDE took 2, Hello/How Are You was quick, only 2 weeks, and my mix took 3 months too. Even furthermore, I went on hold from February to June of this year for ACT/SAT/AP/Finals. Especially my more recent covers are extremely high quality (I would honestly say my Happy Halloween cover is at the same level as Amatsuki or Ashe) and I plan on releasing a new Gishinanki cover soon. I just am having a hard time facing several month's work for another flop.
It sounds like you're giving up and taking this the wrong way. Tell me, Have you ever opened your channel to collabs yet? followed a bandwagon yet? Do you have OC? Do you upload at a consistent rate? What do your videos look like? What do you use to mix? Have met anyone else in the community yet? These things are very important and having done all if them, CONSTANTLY will eventually help you hit at least 100 subs. I reached 100 subs in 1 and a half months, my content wasn't even that good at the time, however, my supporters saw the determination and raw talent in me. That is why you can't give up.
i wish you lots of luck,
jess
this thread is very interesting! I've been covering vocaloid songs since 2009 (I was only 12yo that time lol but my latest cover was 4 years ago lol). I'm not popular, and yes I know why. I'm not doing collabs with other utaite, I'm not active, and I don't have good equipments. All I have in me is just my love for vocaloid songs and singing as a hobby(I'm not a good singer tho).
for some people, they became utaite because of their passion in singing. They never think of becoming popular. If you like to sing, you'll be better and better as time passed. As for me, I never thinking about popularity when I first upload my cover. I just like to sing, that's it. It's a bonus if people likes my cover and the views rising. I would be happy and love to see that too..
Maybe there's no giving up being utaite for me. Even though I'm now in hiatus, I'm still trying to improve my singingl and finding my voice genre.. singing with certain songs that fit my voice (I think this is important too!!) so that you have a strong characteristic that people will remember (something like branding I think?). If we recall the popular utaites out there.. they have their own voice character that makes them different and unique and worth to be loved. Once you get the love, you need to be active! And as the love keep rising, you can try different genre that could attract more people.
Being a real utaite is still one of my dream... I'm still learning about recording hardware and software too right now. I'll wait until I can make money and buy those things even though that means I need to wait till 5-6 years from now lol imthinkingaboutre-debutlol
Good luck for your friend!
no
but you can pay money lol
Can i be an utaite or youtaite? with just using a phone?(my voice isn't good) , anyone use smule in here?
Technically you are an utaite/youtaite if you upload to nicovideo/youtube, but a phone mic usually doesn't have a good quality.
So I'd say it just depends on your goal. If you just want to have fun, at least starting out with a phone mic may be okay, but you may want to invest in a better mic in the future. (If you get more subscribers, or if you decide you want to pursue this hobby for a long time) If you want decent sounding covers, you need to invest in a better mic, as well as upgrade your mixing and singing skills.
A good mic will not help if your mixing skills or singing skills suck BTW, so if you believe your voice isn't good, a good mic will not enhance your singing skills. On the other side, your covers will not sound very good, even if you have wonderful singing skills, if you don't use a decent mic. If you aim for professional sound, you will need all three: singing skills, mixing skills, a good mic.
I don't use smule, but if you want professionally sounding covers I advise against smule, as it's mostly a karaoke kind of app, it seems, so you probably won't be able to mix the tracks as professionally. But for starting out for fun it may be good, I don't know...
I suggest you look through our Beginning Singers board. For example there's this thread about relatively cheap mics and possibly more relevant threads too! :)
How and where should I start?
