Hanatan (花たん) is a female utaite who is known for her beautiful voice with an amazing vocal range and vibrato. Her first song covered was Hajimete no Oto in February 23, 2008 when she was 22 years old. She was younger and had a clear and high voice and her famed vibrato ability. As she matured and practiced for years, her voice grew into the one it is today.

Hanatan is known for her ability, versatility, and portrayal of emotions. From candy pop to hard rock, ballads to dance remixes, Hanatan does not shy away from any type of song and varies her voice accordingly. For example, in her Jishou Mushoku , she sings in a very high and careful voice, yet in her cover of Ao , she sings in a rock style with a plethora of strength.

Her most viewed cover is Romeo and Cinderella , with over 5.6 million views as of September 2025, and it is the 49th most viewed video under the utattemita tag on NND. An upload of her version of it from her Flower Rail album has 36.9M views on Youtube.

Before she became an utaite, she drew pictures and posted them on PiaPro (CGM operated by Crypton Future Media, famous for producing VOCALOIDs)[4][5]. One day, an utaite (now inactive) credited her illustration and she was notified of it, and that was the first time she learned about the utattemita tag on Niconico Douga (she had been using NND since 2006 before it was added in 2007). She decided to try sing herself, which is why she posted her Hajimete no Oto cover, which was recorded on Skype’s microphone function to put sound on her computer.[4]

In her early days, some of her covers were tagged as being deserving of more views (もっと評価されるべき, motto hyouka sareru beki), but this disappeared as she grew more popular with her participation in the Super★Anime☆Remix SUPER BEST album, the 2009-2010 Niconico Conference (a national tour in her city Nagoya) and Nico Nico Live Broadcast events back when they were available. She was said to have represented a new era of singing on Niconico Douga as a result.[6]

Her main collaboration partner is Pokota, who she often does covers with, such as Aitai , Perfect Crime , Cendrillon (10th anniversary ver ), Suki Kirai (live ver ), Catastrophe (live ver ), Aa, Subarashiki Nyansei , Kakumei Dualism , Preserved Roses , Tenbin -Libra- , etc. She has released multiple albums with him like HaNaPoKo♨Labo in 2012, HANAPOKO ROCOCO and HANAPOKO Acoustic 2018TOUR ver., HANAPOKO CARNIVAL and Hanapoko Acoustic 2019, and HANAPOKO drawing in 2020, and performed multiple concerts together. They have even written the lyrics of original songs for each other to sing, such as Hanatan singing Yume Hanabi, and Pokota singing Sea snow.

Other utaite she has collaborated with:

  • Montea: covered Never , released the album Blooming Garden (2011)
  • Wotamin, Prico, ChouCho and Korosuke: sang net idol group DANCEROID's song Jōnetsu o Upload (composed by samfree) (2011)
  • Choucho: covered PolyphonicBranch’s Taiyou to Tsuki no Rondo (2011)
  • 96Neko: covered ACUTE with Pokota (2012), Venomania Kou no Kyouki with Pokota, Kakichoco, Wotamin, and che:Sakurai, and participated in Wotamin’s Hello Laughter cover in and Gero’s Tokyo Winter Session (2017)
  • Aomofu and ASK: performed the harmonising vocals for Hanatan's Tengaku (2012). Group name revealed in ASK's video of their special acrylic stand set sold in 2021, Chinozo’s Goodbye Sengen first song officially covered together under the unit (which she drew the picture for) (2022), in December original songs Haruka Mirai (composed by ZYTOKINE) and No word to say. (composed by minato) released
  • Kakichoco: covered Story , and original song CONTINUE (part of doujin circle minnasankaproject (みんな参加プロジェクト) release) (2014)
  • ΦKushiΦ: original song Yowasa (part of doujin circle minnasankaproject (みんな参加プロジェクト) release) (2015)
  • Gero: covered Daoko and Kenshi Yonezu’s song Uchiage Hanabi (2018)
  • Yumamiya (who often does mixing for her), ASK, Tourai, Asamaru, Jack and Aomofu (all born in the Showa era of Japan, December 25, 1926-January 7, 1989): covered sasakure.UK's Tondemo-Wonderz (which she drew the picture for) (2022)
  • Nanami Urara: covered Raspberry * Monster as a Youtube short (2023)
  • Shiva and Emuchan: covered rerulili’s Kami no manimani as part of their meeting on Pikapika (an app for singers to sing without showing their face) (2024)
  • Shijin, Glutamine, Underbar, KAKERINE, Pokota, nero, Rumdarjun, Reji, Matsushita, NORISTRY, YRCH, PARED and Tsukasashi: participated in the 14-person chorus of Black★Rock Shooter hosted on Shijin's channel (2025)

She has been a participant in Gero’s Chang Gero Sonic at the Odaiba Yagai Tokusetsu Kaijou chain in Tokyo in 2018, being one of the 25 utaite to sing in front of a crowd of 5000 people.[7] Since then, she has appeared each year, and is singing alongside other utaite in the songs Mind Craft (2018), Windfall Dance (2019), A Song I Tried to Sing (2020), Jinsei ni Hakushu Kassai wo (2021) and Kao mo honmyou mo shira nakutatte orera tomodachi darou? (2022).

Aside from doriko, the VOCALOID producer she has collaborated with the most is Kikuo, forming the duo Kikuohana. After hearing her singing Tsuki no Youkai in 2011, he thought she was really good at singing, and wanted to collaborate with her.[8][9] Before their full album collaborations, she has also sung Waltz of Malice (finished 2-3 months before the deadline for Flower Rail, which ended up giving them some more time to collaborate with each other[8]) Akazukin no Ookami (on Hanatan’s CD Dirnl.Frau in 2012[9]), and Lie Lie Lie, which were songs that he produced for her when Hanatan asked VOCALOID producers to create songs for her albums/CD. As a result, Kikuohana Act 1 and Act 2 were released because of this on March 30, 2016, and May 31, 2017, respectively, under the label Subcul-rise Record.

Some collaborations with VOCALOID/vocal-synth producers where the VOCALOID and Hanatan version were released at the same time include:

  • PolyphonicBranch's Shinjuu Kamereon on the DUST BOX album on 28 April, 2012)
  • HoneyWorksRaspberry*Monster on 6 June 2013 (her 3rd most viewed Niconico video)
  • OSTER project's flower of sorrow on 27 June 2013 (also on Primrose Flower Voice)
  • LiveP’s Dake on 28 September, 2020
  • tamayura ni negaiwo’s Additional Mystery Time on 8 November, 2020
  • Riei’s Shoutai on 23 April 2022

Aside from her utaite activities, she has been using the alias YURiCa (ユリカ) since 2008 in her doujin activities (which she also started using as YURiCa/Hanatan in 2014[4][8]), and has since then released several collaboration albums with producers, some albums, as well as other singles for games, hundreds of Touhou arrangements[10], other VOCALOID composers and visual novels. She has also been featured as a vocalist of the Touhou doujin circles SOUND HOLIC, halozy, DiGiTAL WiNG and THE OTHER FLOWER. She also created her own circle cordelia in 2009, that she uses as a name. She held her first one-man live as YURiCa on August 8, 2015, in Tokyo.[11] The ranking of her original albums in the Oricon charts has been 32nd for 3 weeks (Flower Drops), 35th for 3 weeks (Primrose Flower Voice), 40th for 3 weeks (Flower) 35th for 2 weeks (Flower Rail) and 49th for 1 week (ERiCa).[12]

She also served as a guest vocalist for metal composer Keisuke Kurose's doujin circle and musician-illustrator duo ELFENSJóN since 2021. She appeared on the albums Ephemera (tracks 1 , 2 , 4 , 7 and 8 ) and Zenith (tracks 1 , 2 , 5 , 9 , 10 and 11 ), and the remake EP Reincarnate (tracks 1 , 2 , 3 and 6 ).

On January 14, 2022, she made her Vtuber debut. Click here to visit her Vtuber page. She does singing streams (usually 2 hours long while interacting with the audience), gameplay, and makes announcements. She has an incredible amount of vocal stamina, as is most evident in her live cover of Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga , a medley that is 10 minutes long.

She is a huge fan of anime songs, as shown in her Vtuber model having a shirt says "I ♡ Anison" (I ♡ アニソン). In 2022, she finally achieved her dream of being able to sing the opening for an anime.[13] The song was Arc-en-Ciel (TV size) (fullsize ), composed by doriko, opening for the anime The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady. She performed a selfcover piano version of it in 2023. She sang the third ending song UMBRA by ELFENSJóN for episodes 9-12 of the anime of the light novel Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World? (which also came with the song Alba ).[14] She also sang the ending song gradation for the anime of the light novel The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor.[15]

Vocal Profile[]

Parameter Details
Vocal Type Soprano[citation needed]
Vocal Range At least C♯3[16] to F6[17] (3 octaves and 4 semitones)
Whistle Register No
Highest note F6 (head voice)
Lowest note Unknown
   Significant high notes:
   A5: Tengaku
   E5: flower of sorrow, Senbonzakura
   Significant low notes:
   C♯3: Tengaku
   Significant head voice notes:
F6: Transmit (some classify as a whistle)
C6: Ai Sare Hibiware Kagami no Uta
Vocal ranges of Hanatan's original songs:
G♯3 to E5: Arc en ciel
F♯3 to D5: Ray of Light
   B3 to G5: Fuyajō

Vocal Positives: She makes sure to put of all her voice registers, including chest voice, mixed voice and head voice to good use, and has a smooth transition between her registers, like going from head voice to chest voice in Hikari Yo . She is recognized for her belting ability and vibrato, most notably in her cover of Tengaku (live covers: , ) where the highest note she reaches is an A5, ("sono kaku ni fureta koe o hariagete")[16], with the vibrato lasting for 7 seconds. She has good control of her larynx, like lowering it to sing dramatic-like, or raising it to reach higher notes.[18] Her vocal ability has been recognized by numerous VOCALOID producers, like Kikuo, UtsuP and OSTER project. It has been said that her songs have a quality of being ones that only can she sing, and that the best of her voice can be heard when pushed to their limits.

Thanks to her extensive experience of singing at karaoke for almost her whole entire life, her best quality is being able to sing live while having fun chatting and laughing with viewers and always thanking the original artist when she finishes singing a song, and she often receives the comment "CD sound source comes from the throat" (口からCD音源, guchi kara CD ongen)[19], a term for singers whose singing ability live (where a singer is able to only do a single take and could have errors with lyrics or pitch) is comparable to the one in the studio (where edits happen and lines are often re-recorded until the perfect one can be made). It is noted that for her original songs, Hanatan actually records her vocals in 1 take[18], unless the director for vocals specifically asks her not to do so, like her work with OSTER project.[4] An example of Hanatan singing an acapella version of Sincerely can be found on her channel as a Youtube short.

She is capable of reaching C6[20] in her head voice, which is an expected note for a soprano to sing. One song that she is famous on NND for covering is Yuyoyuppe's Palette , with a live performance of the song here , showing her skill. Her covers of Last Night, Good Night (live: ) and Otome Kaibou (live ) are also a good demonstration of her high notes within this register. Out of her original songs, her head voice is noticeable in her songs Seika (produced by ATOLS) (live versions: , Live #763549661 on Twitcast (members-only)), Fukouya no Musume and Watashi Dono Watashi (produced by Kikuo).

She can sing songs like Bad Apple!! (live, compare to studio ver. on HANA TOHO BEST) that require the singer to sing lines fast with little pause between each other. Her speed is also displayed in her live singing of U , Rolling Girl , Lost One no Goukoku , Ama no Jaku , ROKI , and the fast section of Gurenge (1:51) as an encore for her birthday live. She can also sing the 10-second-long note in Koi wa Sensou, although only 5 seconds long live , but she's been shown to be capable of singing notes longer than 5 seconds live. She can also grunt, as demonstrated in Akazukin no Ookami and most notably when she sings Villain live.

She has been able to transition between notes that are very far apart smoothly, as seen in the Kikuohana song Ai Sare Hibiware Kagami no Uta . Beginning at 4:25, she sings the notes G♯4, E♭5, D5, B4, G4, G5, F5, E♭5, and C5. Then, there is a leap in the song that she sings going C4, G4, B4, D5, D4, F5, and D4, which she repeats three times. Finally, the climax of the song starts from G4, F♯4, F4, and E♭4, but she goes to a B3 and then slides up into a C6 in her head voice.[20] The range for the finale of the song from the lowest note to the highest is B3 to C6 (2 octaves and 1 semitone), which in its entirety only lasts 6 seconds long.

Trivia[]

  • She owns a PS3, PS Vita, and a Nintendo 3DS.[citation needed]
  • She enjoys playing the PC MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 (XIV).[21]
  • She owns a pet fox, though it doesn't currently live with her.[citation needed]
  • Her current anime character crush is Arakita Yasutomo from Yowamushi Pedal.[22] She is a fan of his character’s voice actor, Hiroyuki Yoshino. In 2015, as part of her album Flower Rail, the VOCALOID producer Teniwoha was contacted by Hanatan to make a song for her. He managed to come into contact with Hiroyuki as well, and her 3rd track of the album ended up featuring Hiroyuki as a guest vocal.[23] The song, Kamatte wo ai ni , comes with a promotional music video.
  • Teniwoha also once again created an original song for Hanatan to sing with Pokota for the 4th Hanapoko’s album.
  • Rather than writing her name, she usually marks her covers with a ✿ character in the title, since the word "Hana" in her name means flower.
  • She likes to call Pokota "baldy" (ハゲ).[24]
  • She has had really long hair that falls beyond her lower back.[citation needed] Her current hair color is black dyed with pink (which was pink and then blonde before going back to pink), but she has also dyed her hair blue before.[25]
  • She is blood type O.[26]
  • She was influenced by singers/bands such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, and L'Arc-en-Ciel.[27] As a child, she often sang Ayumi Hamasaki and Hikaru Utada’s songs.[5]
  • The character shown on the Flower Drops album was also made into a motion-tracked avatar for Hanatan to sing Ame ka Yume during the 2nd day of Voca Nico Night in 2012. She also appeared on Paintër .
  • She often sang the third and last opening song for the Magic Knight Rayearth anime, Hikari to Kage wo Dakishimeta mama by Naomi Tamura, as a child.[5] It's even the 6th song she covered on NND, and Naomi composed and wrote the lyrics of track 9, Saisho no namida, from Flower Drops for Hanatan to sing.
  • She's not good at being like everyone else and following the trend of what would be the most popular song to sing, but rather she picks songs that she likes and has fun singing.[5]
  • When she records herself, she usually sings with an emphasis on nuance, and then thinking about editing later. OSTER PROJECT in The flower of dim world did the vocal direction for her, making her sing in parts rather than in a single take, which was a challenge, but Hanatan was able to grow as a vocalist.[4]
  • She learned the piano until fifth grade of elementary school, but she didn't learn anything about it because she wasn't serious about learning.[4]
  • While also having a career as a doujin vocalist, she didn't realise the name Hanatan would become popular so she regrets making it her name (also referenced in the Chang Gero Sonic 2020 theme), but all of the titles of her album so far have FLOWER in it.[4]
  • Singing has been her hobby ever since a child (her family took her to karaoke clubs in the middle of the night), singing karaoke with her friends and family. She always received compliments from them, but she was self-conscious and doubted herself. She liked Nico Nico Douga because of the anonymous culture, which was the first time she was able to be complimented by people she didn’t know, and she gained confidence from it.[4]
  • She likes the difference between being an utaite, doujin vocalist and releasing major music, as in doujin music she can see the face of each person who buys a CD, and in major music she can see more people and hold release events.[4]
  • Since she sang as a hobby, it was difficult to turn it into a job, and at first she thought it would be painful to get a job, but she liked singing the most. Releasing three albums was a new discovery every time she released one album, and some things changed in her personality, and now she says she’s blessed to have a job as a singer.[4]
  • When asked if she's always liked rock music, she said that rock is probably her favourite music, but she doesn't think about it in terms of genre. She likes cute and catchy songs, but most of the songs that she's liked so far have been rock.[23] She also likes the euro, trance and EDM genres.[28]
  • She was singing 2 songs a day for her Flower Rail album.[23]
  • Her favourite cut of meat is short ribs and skirt steak.[23]
  • If she could live a second life, the job she'd take is an oil tycoon because she doesn't want to have a problem with work or money.[23]
  • She has not had professional vocal training or been in a band, and most of her talent comes from singing in karaoke for over 20 years, surprising viewers. She says that vocalists will usually do something technical like taking care of the humidity, but instead she tries to sing with emotion, like feeling the lyrics and atmosphere of the song and singing quieter, or singing more strongly to fit the lyrics even if the song is calm.[23]
  • Her recommended yakiniku restaurant is Kawachidon in Kurokawa, Nagoya. She likes it because the meat is delicious and the price is reasonable because it's run by a butcher shop.[23]
  • One of her favourite songwriters is bermei.inazawa, who made the ending song for the Higurashi anime, Taishou A. She used to sing it a lot at karaoke, and eventually he made an original song for her, Frozen Flowers , for her EriCa album.[28]
  • She doesn't really like performing live as she gets nervous in front of a crowd and can forget lyrics, but because she loves singing she'll do it and when the day approaches she'll practice for it.[28]
  • The illustrator for Kikuohana Act 1’s album cover is the team Gekidan Inu Curry, who worked on the production design of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime.[29] Hanatan has also covered Kalafina’s Magia (the second ending for Madoka☆Magica) on her album Mahou Shoujo 28.
  • She always liked singing, but at first she didn't know anything about vocal technique, but when Hikaru Utada debuted as an artist she learned about the vibrato she used in Automatic and wondered what "the small tremor" was when she was 12. She was interested in her singing style, so she practiced it all the time and was able to do vibrato.[9] She covered Automatic on a livestream in 2022 where she sang Hikaru Utada songs.
  • She likes the song Smile by Avril Lavigne, and she suggested Kikuo to make a song like it, which ended up being Owari Kigan for Kikuohana Act 2.[9]
  • She has a pet dog named Hotaru (ホタル)[30], who is featured on the cover of one of her albums .
  • Another example of her lyric capabilities is her own original song with the VOCALOID IA called color (October 19, 2015), where she wrote lyrics and composed some of the music as well, with the VOCALOID producer DarvishP also working on the composition & arrangement.
  • She has also done a selfcover of color on her album Flower Rail that was released on the 21st of the same year.
  • In November of 2019, Hanatan found out that she developed vocal polyps during summer of that year from vocal overuse. This resulted in her having to postpone the release of her CDs for THE OTHER FLOWER during Comiket and the Hanapoko live in February the next year.[31] She had her vocal surgery in the morning on January 7, 2020, and resumed her activities.[32]
  • She is friends with the utaite Tsukino, as she appeared as a special guest on her 2022 birthday one-man live.[33]
  • The utaite Chogakusei is also a fan of Hanatan as he has Fukouya no Musume by Kikuohana in his playlist of songs he likes, and he’s covered Hikari Yo.
  • The Vtuber Ayunda Risu from Hololive Indonesia is a fan of Hanatan’s, as she sang her song Hana no Uta on a livestream in 2020 after reaching 40K subscribers. In another instance, when Hanatan was holding a livestream and singing MikitoP’s Sarishinohara, she was listening and posted a tweet of herself singing along.[34]
  • The youtaite LittleJayneyCakes is a fan of Hanatan as she has commented on her EriCa album crossfade and covered some of her Kikuohana songs.
  • The youtaite Shannon is also a fan of hers and has covered her song Sasabune, calling her voice gorgeous.
  • The Vtuber Miyoshino Shiki has also complimented Hanatan's vocals, having covered Hitogawari, calling her an amazing vocalist.
  • She is friends with the VOCALOID producer UtsuP as they both live in the same city, and they held a Nico Nico broadcast chatting with each other in 2013.[35] He promised to make a song for her, and later he produced the song Joushi no Uta (track 14 on her Flowers BEST album in 2015) and UNTOUCHABLE GIRL (track 3 on her Comiket 88 (2015) album CIRCUS★CIRCUS). The former was later released with a version by the VOCALOID flower in his album TEYAKI (remastered in #SUPER_SHIBORIKASU). He has said that he loves her cover of Palette on Twitter.
  • Another VOCALOID producer she is friends with is pianist marasy, and she sang on a 3 hour long Nico Nico Live Broadcast held on his channel on the 2nd of September, 2015 . It was after he had finished playing the piano for one of the tracks on her Flower Rail album that was released in October. The songs they performed together were Amatsu Kitsune, Let It Go, Linaria, Happy Birthday, Kuusou Shoujo e no Koitegami, Black★Rock Shooter, etc.
  • In 2017, Hanatan’s name was mentioned in an interview with a German rock guitarist (Doug Aldrich). His publishers contacted him with a request to write some songs for Hanatan that were similar to Lady Gaga.[36] He also participated in the composition for the 3rd track on Hanatan’s flower of dim world album in 2014, live with a ghost mind .
  • She is a popular utaite in South Korea like Ken Kamikita, to the point she even has a spelling of her own name in Korean, 하나땅. Her comment sections and livestreams often have Korean listeners, and on social media she posts translations of her messages in Korean.[37]
  • She sang the Japanese/international version of the song Knots Way for the Korean video game Crusaders Quest in 2016 (composed by NICODE, a music composer for Korean video games), which made her gain many Korean fans.
  • Later, she sang another song for Crusaders Quest, the theme song for the season 2 episode 1 boss that season, Avenir in 2018 (composed by ampstyle from the musical group Dareharu), which increased her popularity with Korean fans.
  • She held her first one-man-live in South Korea at the MuV Hall in Seoul on March 3-4, 2018[38], where she sang the songs that made her popular. It was hosted by SQUARE MUSIQ, which was a company that helped bridge Koreans to utattemita content.
  • She covered the K-pop girl group IVE's song LOVE DIVE (in the original Korean) on a 2022 livestream, making Korean fans happy.
  • For the same reason that she has Korean fans, she also has many Chinese and Taiwanese fans and she has performed multiple concerts in those countries. Her first concert in China was on May 21, 2016, in Shanghai.[citation needed] She is also holding an upcoming concert in Taipei on October 11 this year.[39]
  • She loves wonton noodles and eats it every time she visits China.[40]
  • She attended the Cosplay Up! event at the Starmall EDSA-Shaw in Manila, the Philippines, on February 23-25 2024 as a guest performer.[41] Another guest was also the Vtuber Miori Celesta, who covered the Kikuohana song Hitogawari for Halloween.
  • In 2023, she announced that her old microphone, an Audio-Technica 4040 (AT4040), would be graduating after having been using it for 15 years. It was replaced with an Open Condenser 16 (OC16) microphone.[42]
  • Her second Youtube channel where she uploaded her cover of Ado’s Odo was created because she could not receive monetization on her main channel. Aside from donations on Youtube livestreams from fans, she also depends on money gained from concert and fan memberships so she can continue her work.
  • She first contacted doriko personally so that he could compose a song for her for a doujin album in Summer Comiket, and their mutual friend Tourai recommended her to doriko as he told him that Hanatan was a very good singer.[13]
